Sometimes, while out working, you stumble upon places you'd almost rather keep to yourself.
During one of my drives through inland Spain, I decided to take a day off to hike the Ruta del Río Ebrón. I'd already seen plenty of beautiful photos of it, but as is so often the case: it's even more impressive in real life.
The route is located near El Cuervo de Aragón and is, in my opinion, an absolute must for anyone who loves nature, tranquility and hiking.
The first stretch of the trail — sandy ground, tall rock walls and lush greenery on both sides
A good start is half the work
Drive through the village until you reach the last restaurant. Turn right there and follow the unpaved track. Don't let that put you off; even a regular car can manage this fine if you take it slow.
At the end of the track is a spacious car park with several picnic tables. We started off with a relaxed breakfast there. With nothing but birdsong and the sound of the river in the background, the day already couldn't go wrong.
As soon as you enter the gorge, it quickly becomes clear why this route is so special
A hike that keeps surprising you
From the very first steps you can feel this isn't an ordinary hiking trail.
You follow the Río Ebrón through an impressive gorge, surrounded by tall rock walls and crystal-clear, turquoise water. In several places you walk along metal walkways firmly fixed to the mountainside. A little later, you cross the river again via a charming wooden bridge.
Left: the turquoise water that accompanies the entire route. Right: metal stairs and walkways along the steep rock walls
"It's exactly that variety that makes this route so special. A new view awaits around every bend — and the sound of flowing water is your constant companion throughout the hike."

The ingenious metal structures make the route accessible — and spectacular
The reward at the end
After around six kilometers, you reach the Cascada del Calicanto. A beautiful waterfall, tucked away among the rocks and greenery. A perfect spot to rest for a while, have a bite to eat and, above all, enjoy the silence.
That's when you realize once again just how incredibly diverse Spain really is.
Right up to the very last stretch, the route keeps surprising you with spectacular structures along the water

Why I'm sharing this place with you
As a property finder and buyer's advisor, I spend a lot of time on the road in Spain. Of course I visit homes and new-build projects, but I also love taking the time to explore the surrounding area.
Because ultimately, you're not just buying a house. You're choosing a way of life.
It's exactly these kinds of hidden spots that show why I love traveling through Spain so much. The Ruta del Río Ebrón is, to me, a perfect example of that.
Maybe this hike will inspire you, on your next stay in Spain, to drive away from the coast and discover the beautiful inland region.
And believe me… you won't forget this hike anytime soon.
